Pathology lab SEO that gets every test found, booked and named by AI

People don't search for a lab. They search for a test: "HbA1c test near me", "thyroid panel cost", "same-day blood test". The doctors who refer to you search differently again. I build test-level pages, collection-centre pages and referrer content so a lab wins both searches, in Google and in AI answers.

2 of 8 answered on your site more answers, more tests booked

This is query fan-out: Google’s AI Mode and AI Overviews split one question into many searches, and ChatGPT search rewrites it into several. The lab whose pages answer the most of them, clearly, is the one the answer names.

Three scoreboards. You need all three.

Pathology lab SEO for how patients search now

Patients don’t type keywords any more. They have a conversation.

They tell ChatGPT or Google how they feel, ask which test they need, then ask where to get it. The lab that answers every turn gets named at the end. Tap a test.

What I build

What I build for labs

The evidence. In September 2026 I checked 30 pathology and diagnostic lab websites in four English-speaking markets. Half had no page for an individual test in their sitemap. 43% had no structured data at all, and only 3 used the schema type built to describe a medical test. For a business whose customers search test by test, that is the single biggest gap, and it is fixable.

Every engagement follows The Patient Decision Path: each page is mapped to the stage a person is at, and the stages are linked so a first search can end in a booking.

Test-level architecture

a page for each test and panel patients search for: what it measures, preparation, turnaround, price where you publish it, and where to book, grouped by condition so "diabetes tests" finds the right panel.

Collection-centre pages

every draw site with its own page, hours, parking and booking link, matched to its own Google Business Profile. No copied templates with the suburb swapped.

Referrer visibility

pages for ordering physicians: test menu, specimen requirements, turnaround and courier details, with CPT context in the US. The side of lab search almost nobody optimises.

Structured data

MedicalOrganization on the site, MedicalTest on test pages, location data for every collection site.

AI-answer readiness

concise, sourced, machine-readable test answers that ChatGPT and AI Overviews can quote.

  2. 2RetrieveIt pulls short passages from test pages, Google profiles, directories and health sites.
  3. 3CiteIt names the labs whose test facts agree across sources, and links them.

  1. 1 the lab’s own HbA1c test page
  2. 2 the collection centre’s Google Business Profile
  3. 3 the test page’s turnaround section

From my lab audits

Four problems I find on lab websites, and how I fix them

These are the problems I see most in this sector. Each one costs bookings quietly, and each one has a specific fix.

1The test menu is a PDF

what I seeGoogle can read a PDF, but it cannot rank one PDF for 400 different tests, and AI answers rarely quote from one.

what I check, then fixsite:yourlab.com filetype:pdf, then which tests have their own URL in the sitemap. One HTML page per searched test, grouped by condition; the PDF stays as a download for referrers.

2Collection centres share one profile

what I seeReviews, photos and calls pile onto the head office listing while draw sites stay invisible on Maps.

what I check, then fixEvery address you draw blood at, checked against the profiles in your Business Profile account. A verified profile per draw site, each linked to its own centre page with matching name, address and hours.

3Test names don't match how people search

what I seeYour menu says “Glycated haemoglobin”; patients type “HbA1c” or “diabetes blood test”.

what I check, then fixSearch Console queries against the wording on each test page. Patient wording in the title and first line, the clinical name beside it, synonyms answered on the page.

4Booking happens on a third-party domain

what I seeThe page that ranks sends people to a portal that analytics can’t see, so no booking is ever credited to search.

what I check, then fixTag Assistant on the booking flow, then GA4 referrals. Cross-domain measurement or a booking event fired on return, with no test name in the data.

Pathology lab SEO questions labs ask me

still wondering? Ask me on a 30-minute call or on WhatsApp.

01What is pathology lab SEO?

Pathology lab SEO is the work of making a lab visible and trusted when patients and doctors search for tests. It covers a page for every test and panel people search for, a page and Google Business Profile for every collection centre, referrer content for ordering physicians, structured data, technical health and booking tracking. The goal is more booked tests, not traffic for its own sake.

02Can a local lab really beat national chains?

For test-plus-location searches, yes, chains win broad queries, but a lab with a page per test and a well-run profile per collection centre wins the "near me" searches that become bookings.

03Do you work with reference and specialty labs?

Yes, the work leans toward referrer content, the test menu and clinician authority.

04Can I see what my site shows crawlers?

Yes, I'll run the same benchmark checks on your site and send a private one-page snapshot.

05Can a local lab really compete with national chains?

For test-plus-location searches, yes. National chains win broad queries, but a lab with a proper page per test and a well-run profile for each collection centre regularly wins the “near me” and city searches that turn into bookings.

06Can I see what my lab’s site shows to search and AI crawlers?

Yes. I will run the same checks from the benchmark on your site and send you a private one-page snapshot with the three fixes I would make first.

07Should each test have its own page?

Every test or panel that patients search for by name should. A test menu as one long table, or a PDF, cannot rank for a single test. Rarely searched specialist tests can live in the referrer menu instead.

08Which schema should a pathology lab use?

MedicalOrganization or DiagnosticLab for the lab, MedicalTest on each test page, and location data for every collection centre, all matching the facts on the visible page and on each Google profile.
