Healthcare Conversion Tracking & Analytics

Healthcare conversion tracking should answer one question: which searches became booked appointments. Most practices can’t answer it. GA4 was migrated and never configured, calls aren’t tracked, and pixels sit on pages they shouldn’t. I build tracking that is accurate, careful with health data, and useful for deciding where SEO effort goes next.

Output is a dashboard. Optimisation is a decision.

A dashboard full of sessions and impressions tells you nothing about patients. The point of tracking is to tell you which service pages, locations and search terms produce appointments, so the next month of SEO goes where it pays. Everything I set up is built backwards from that decision.

What you get, and what I tune it for

GA4 configuration

What you getClean property, event taxonomy and key events.

What I optimise it forEvents that mean something to a practice (appointment request, call click, direction request, booking completed), labelled by service line and location so reports answer business questions.

Tag management

What you getGTM container, consent and data layer.

What I optimise it forConsent Mode set up before anything fires, and no personal or health details in URLs, event names or parameters. Server-side tagging on your own cloud where the risk justifies it.

Call tracking

What you getDynamic numbers on the website.

What I optimise it forNumbers swap on your site only. Your Google profile and citations keep one canonical number, so tracking never damages local rankings.

Booking and CRM

What you getBooking system and CRM events connected.

What I optimise it forEnquiries matched to real appointments where your systems allow it, so organic is credited with patients, not form fills.

AI and search attribution

What you getChannel groups and Search Console linked.

What I optimise it forA dedicated channel for AI referrals (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot), server-log checks for AI agents acting for users, and Search Console queries joined to landing pages and conversions.

Reporting

What you getLooker Studio dashboard.

What I optimise it forOne page per decision: which services, which locations, which pages to invest in next, with annotations for every change we ship.

Health data: what I watch for

HIPAA in the US

In 2024 a federal court vacated part of the HHS guidance on tracking public web pages, and HHS dropped its appeal. The rest of the guidance still covers patient portals, booking flows and anywhere health information is exchanged, so tracking there is set up with the most care.

State laws

Laws such as Washington’s My Health My Data Act reach further than HIPAA and apply to far more organisations. I flag where they may apply to you.

GDPR and similar laws

Health data is special-category data in the EU and UK. Consent comes first and nothing sensitive is collected by accident.

Advertising pixels

Ad pixels on appointment and condition pages are where most exposure sits. I map every tag on your site and remove or restrict the risky ones.

A note on data and trust

I don’t need patient records to do this work, and I never put your analytics exports or client data into AI tools. This page explains how I set tracking up. It is not legal advice, and I work alongside your privacy or compliance lead where you have one.

Work in this sector

Sample plan · orthopedic practice

Enquiries, not traffic

In my sample orthopedic plan, tracking is rebuilt first so the practice can see appointment enquiries, consultation requests and Google profile actions by month. That becomes the scoreboard every later decision is judged on.

Anonymised client work. Figures come from the client’s own Search Console, Analytics and call tracking. I walk you through the reports on a call, with identifying details removed.

Questions practices ask

Can a healthcare website use GA4?

Yes, with care. The risk is in what is collected and where tags fire, not in GA4 itself. I configure it so no health information reaches it, and restrict tracking on sensitive pages.

Will call tracking hurt my local SEO?

Not if it is done properly. Tracking numbers appear only on your website. Your Google profile and directory listings keep one consistent number.

What is server-side tagging and do I need it?

Tags run on your own server instead of in the visitor’s browser, so you control exactly what is sent to each platform. It is worth it for sites with booking flows or heavy advertising.

Can you show AI search traffic separately?

Yes. I set up a GA4 channel for visits from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot, so you can see them next to Google.
