The Patient Decision Path: A Healthcare SEO Method
Most healthcare websites are organised around the practice’s own navigation: About, Services, Team, Locations. Patients don’t search like that. They start with a symptom, move to a condition, then a test, a treatment, a specialist and a place they can get to. The Patient Decision Path is how I map a site to that journey.
- ConditionSymptom and condition pages that answer the first worried search in plain language, with clinician review.
- DiagnosisWhat testing involves, how long it takes and what the results mean. Labs and imaging centres live here.
- TreatmentConservative and non-surgical options, written so a patient understands the order of choices.
- ProcedureThe commercial foundation. Why it is considered, the alternatives, recovery, who performs it, where, and the next step.
- ClinicianPhysician pages as entities: specialties, procedures performed, credentials and locations, connected in schema and across the site.
- LocationGenuinely different location pages, each with its own Google Business Profile, citations and appointment path.
That’s the difference between a page built to rank and a page built to support a patient’s decision.
Why it matters for AI search
Google, ChatGPT and Perplexity decide which practice to mention by how clearly they understand it: what it treats, who treats it and where. The decision path gives them that picture in a form they can read. The same pages that help a patient decide are the pages AI answers quote.
Where it came from
It grew out of a pattern I kept seeing on specialist sites: plenty of symptom content and almost no depth on the procedures and physicians closest to a booking. Rebuilding around the decision path, rather than publishing more blog posts, is how I plan every engagement; my orthopedic sample plan shows it stage by stage. Read the case study.
How it adapts to each sector
Symptom, condition, conservative care, procedure, specialist, location.
Condition, test, preparation, collection site, booking, results.
First search, service, clinician, nearest branch, booking.
The question a family asks, the programme type, trust and accreditation, the first call.
Problem, category, comparison, proof, demo.
See how the method applies to each healthcare sector, or the services that deliver it.
