Hospital SEO for departments, doctors and every campus
A hospital has everything a search engine needs to trust it, specialists, departments, accreditation, locations. Yet hospital sites routinely lose patient searches to single-specialty clinics with a tenth of the authority, because the site's architecture hides that strength. The fix is structural, not editorial.

A department brochure informs. A department hub gets chosen.
This is where hospital SEO pays. Eight blocks on every department hub, each with a job for the patient and a job for search. Count how many yours has.
- 1Answer firstWhat the department treats, in three sentences. The passage AI quotes.
- 2Conditions and proceduresEach with its own page beneath the hub.
- 3Doctors, onceOne canonical profile each, linked here.
- 4CampusesWhich site offers what.
- 5Outcomes you can publishWithin your regulator’s rules, dated.
- 6Referral pathFor GPs and specialists who refer.
- 7Cost and coverFor self-pay and international patients.
- 8An enquiry button I can measureEvery enquiry traced to the department.

Why hospital sites underperform. Department pages written for internal stakeholders. Consultant profiles as PDFs or orphaned bios. Service lines competing with each other and with location pages. Sites migrated during a rebrand with redirects that quietly broke. And measurement that stops at "sessions", never reaching booked appointments.
Every engagement follows The Patient Decision Path: each page is mapped to the stage a person is at, and the stages are linked so a first search can end in a booking.
each clinical service line with a page that can rank for its procedures, connected to departments, consultants and locations.
every physician as a connected entity: specialty, procedures, clinics, credentials, schema.
each site differentiated, each with its own profile and local signals.
URL mapping, redirect testing and parity checks, because hospitals rebrand and rebuild more than anyone. Checklist: /healthcare-website-migration-checklist/

How ChatGPT decides which hospital to name

- 3CiteIt names the hospitals whose doctor and department facts agree across sources.
Which hospital near me is good for heart bypass surgery?
Northbridge Private Hospital performs coronary bypass at its Main Street campus1, where Dr C. Example leads cardiothoracic surgery2, and is rated 4.6 by patients3.
- 1 the hospital’s cardiac surgery page
- 2 the doctor’s canonical profile
- 3 the campus Google Business Profile
- one doctor, one profile Duplicate profiles redirected, so every source tells the same story.
- what I build Physician, department and campus schema connected into one graph.
⌕ bypass surgery recovery time
Most people stay in hospital for about five to seven days after coronary bypass and return to normal activity over six to twelve weeks.

- the quoted passage A direct answer under a heading phrased as the patient’s question.
- why yours Reviewed by the department, dated, consistent across the web.
- a profile per campus Each campus ranks in its own area instead of the main site taking every review.
- departments on profiles Major centres listed where Google allows, linked to their hub pages.
- never this Ad pixels on condition and booking pages. HHS has warned hospitals about tracking that leaks health information.
Four problems I find on hospital sites, and how I fix them
These are the problems I see most in this sector. Each one costs bookings quietly, and each one has a specific fix.
1The same doctor on five pages
what I seeA cardiologist listed on the department, two campus pages and a directory plugin, each with different details.
what I check, then fixA crawl for every doctor name and the URLs it appears on. One canonical profile per doctor, the rest linked or redirected to it.
2Departments competing for a procedure
what I seeOrthopaedics and sports medicine both target knee surgery, so neither ranks well.
what I check, then fixQuery overlap between department hubs in Search Console. One owner per procedure, with the other department linking to it.
3Faceted search flooding the index
what I seeDoctor finder filters create thousands of thin URLs that use up crawling.
what I check, then fixIndexed URL count against the pages you actually want found. Filters kept out of the index; doctor and department pages linked directly.
4Tracking on sensitive pages
what I seeAd pixels firing on condition and booking pages, which HHS has warned hospitals about.
what I check, then fixTag inventory per template. Pixels removed from sensitive templates, measurement rebuilt server-side with no health data.

01What is hospital SEO?
Hospital SEO is the work of making a hospital’s departments, doctors and campuses visible and trusted in search. It covers department hubs, one canonical page per doctor, a page and profile per campus, crawl management for very large sites, schema, governance and reporting by department.
02Our site has thousands of pages, where do you start?
With a crawl and a revenue map: which service lines drive the most valuable patients, and which pages currently answer those searches worst.
03Can you work with our web team and IT?
Yes, the cloud architecture background exists precisely for that.
04Do you handle international patient queries?
Yes, with careful intent mapping by market and language.
05How is hospital SEO different from clinic SEO?
Scale and governance. The principles are the same, but a hospital needs architecture that keeps hundreds of doctors and departments from competing, and a process that gets changes approved.
06Should every doctor have their own page?
Yes, one canonical page each, linked to their department and campuses. Duplicates across department and campus pages are one of the most common hospital SEO problems.
07Can you work alongside our agency?
Yes. I often own organic search and technical SEO while an agency handles brand, social and ads.
08Can you work with our IT team?
Yes. I am trained in cloud architecture and can work with IT on redirects, performance and server-side tracking in their own language.
