Why isn’t my treatment center’s admissions page showing in ChatGPT? I checked 27 sites

Families now ask AI tools where to find help. I looked at 27 independent addiction treatment sites in 10 US states to see what could stop them being found. It is a small, hand-picked sample, not a study, and I name no centers. Here is what I found, and a 5-minute way to check your own site.

What I found across 27 sites

  • 24 of 27 had nothing I could flag from their homepage and robots.txt.
  • 3 of 27 had a fixable gap: one blocked an AI crawler in robots.txt, and two had no meta description.
  • 0 had a real “hide this page from Google” tag in the page head.
  • 3 false alarms. Automated tools reported a hidden-page tag on three sites. In each case the tag came from embedded third-party content (a security challenge or a video player), not from the page itself. If a tool flags your site, confirm it by hand before you change anything.

So the honest answer for most centers is that being blocked is not the main problem. The sites were findable. Whether they get chosen and quoted is a separate question, and it depends on the page itself, which the checks below cover.

Method: independent centers in TN, OH, FL, TX, PA, NC, GA, AZ, CO and MA, picked by hand in 2026. I checked the homepage source and robots.txt only. I could not see server-side headers, so a few blocks could be missed. Treat the numbers as a snapshot, not a rate.

The 5-minute check

1. Is the page indexed?

Open Google Search Console, paste your admissions page address into the search bar at the top, and read the result. “URL is on Google” is what you want. If it says the page is not indexed, the reason is listed underneath. ChatGPT search results lean on the same open web, so a page that search engines cannot find is a poor candidate.

2. Does the page hide itself?

Open the page, view the source, and search for “noindex”. It should not appear in the head of the page. On WordPress, also check Settings, then Reading, and make sure “Discourage search engines from indexing this site” is off.

3. What does robots.txt say?

Open yoursite.com/robots.txt. This is the line that blocks everything, and it should not be there:

User-agent: * Disallow: /

4. Which AI crawlers do you block?

OpenAI documents three. OAI-SearchBot surfaces sites in ChatGPT search. Blocking it means you will not appear in ChatGPT search answers. GPTBot is for training, and disallowing it is a legitimate choice. ChatGPT-User visits pages when a person asks ChatGPT to, and is not used to decide search eligibility. Each setting is independent. A setup that allows search and blocks training looks like this:

User-agent: OAI-SearchBot Allow: /User-agent: GPTBot Disallow: /

OpenAI says changes can take about 24 hours to take effect. Source: OpenAI crawler documentation, checked 19 October 2026. Crawler rules change, so check the source.

5. Can a reader and a bot see the key facts?

Location, levels of care, who you treat, insurance accepted and licensing should be real text on the page, not only inside images, sliders or pop-ups. Use clear headings and short direct answers to what families ask. Keep your name, address and phone the same everywhere you are listed.

Copy this checklist:

  • ☐ Admissions page shows “URL is on Google” in Search Console
  • ☐ No “noindex” in the page head; WordPress search visibility setting is off
  • ☐ robots.txt has no “Disallow: /” under “User-agent: *”
  • ☐ OAI-SearchBot is not blocked, if you want to appear in ChatGPT search
  • ☐ Key facts are plain text; name, address and phone match everywhere

Nobody can promise a mention in ChatGPT. These steps only remove the common blockers.

Questions

Will fixing this get me into ChatGPT answers?

No one can guarantee that. Removing blockers makes it possible. Whether you are chosen depends on how clear, current and trustworthy your page is compared with others.

Should I block GPTBot?

That is your call. Blocking it indicates your content should not be used for training. It is separate from the search crawler, so you can block one and allow the other.

I use a tool that says my page is hidden. Is it?

Not necessarily. Three of the 27 sites I checked were flagged this way and none was real. Open the page source and confirm the tag sits in the page head before changing anything.

How long until a change shows up?

OpenAI says robots.txt changes can take about 24 hours for its search crawler. Google can take days to weeks to recrawl and reindex a page.
